From July to May, the first 11 months of the 2023–24 fiscal year, Pakistan imported mobile phones valued at $1.621 billion. Comparing this to the same period last year, when imports were $516.488 million, shows a massive increase of 213.97%.
The value of mobile phone imports, when translated to local currency, came to Rs458.472 billion. This represents a noteworthy increase of 277.37% over the Rs121.491 billion from the previous year.
Despite a minor decline of 1.58% in May 2024 over April 2024, year-over-year data indicates a sustained upward trend in mobile phone imports. Imports increased from $43.201 million in May 2023 to $158.842 million in May 2024.
Mobile phone imports were not the only factor; local production was involved as well. Pakistan manufactured 10.85 million devices in the first four months of 2024, comprising smartphones and 2G phones.
There is an increasing need for mobile phones in Pakistan, as seen by the significant rise in both imports and domestic manufacture. Even while imports have somewhat decreased month over month, the spike in imports indicates that more individuals are purchasing mobile phones, probably due to developments in technology and a growing desire for connectivity.
