An Official Empties A Dam To Recover A Phone That Fell Into It

A government employee in the Kanker region of Chhattisgarh, India, unintentionally dropped his phone into a dam. In an effort to save the phone, he requested permission from a representative to drain a few feet of water from the dam.

As a result, the Irrigation Department activated a pump, which caused the reservoir to release about 21 lakh (2.1 million) litres of water.

Following the discovery of the event, the Kanker Collector launched an investigation and served RC Dhivar, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) of the water resources department, with a show-cause notice. According to the notification, the SDO allegedly gave verbal consent to remove the water without first asking senior officials' approval, which is deemed improper behaviour.

The Office of Superintendent Engineer has mandated that SDO RK Dhivar's salary be used to cover the cost of the squandered water as a consequence of the probe. Concerns about water being released without authorization and the requirement to follow the right procedures and licences in such situations have been raised by the occurrence.
