Defence Housing Authority (DHA) residents in Karachi's affluent region have been urged to take the required safety precautions as the Arabian Sea storm Biparjoy approaches the city. As the tropical storm strengthened, it was upgraded to an ESCS, or Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm.
On the afternoon of June 15, it is anticipated to make landfall as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) near the southeast Sindh coast, between the Pakistan/Rann of Kutch-Indian Gujarat beaches. The DHA management has informed its citizens of this rising threat and given them advice to be ready for any emergency scenarios that could arise.
An official DHA Karachi account tweeted, "We advise our residents to prepare for the Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) BIPARJOY."
Residents have been asked to safeguard their houses by covering windows and basement entrances as a precaution to avert rainwater damage. Residents are advised to call the DHA helpline at 1092 in case of any emergency.
The steps listed below can help to lessen any potentially harmful effects of the storm that is approaching.
- To prevent water accumulation and flooding, make sure that all required open places are clean and devoid of any infractions.
- To ensure a smooth water flow, thoroughly clean the drains at the major entrances of the dwellings.
- Ensure that there are no unauthorized or temporary structures or materials on the rooftops of any buildings.
- To prevent storm damage to structures, treat the roof.
- To avoid mishaps or electrical risks, tighten up any exposed or slack electrical connections.
- To ensure appropriate drainage, clean all major pipelines and openings.
It is also significant to remember that, for public safety, Section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) has been implemented in coastal regions, including DHA.
