DNA, which retains information about our genetic make-up, has being investigated for the ability to save any data. With everything moving online and technology advancing, the wealth of data collected can now be saved in our very own DNA!
Tom De Greef, professor of synthetic biology at Eindhoven University of Technology, made the allegation. Greef proposes thermos-confined Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) as an enhanced technology for storing data in DNA. He created micro-capsules that function as hard discs.
Each micro-capsule will contain a single data file. They are also designed to close themselves if the temperature reaches 122°F. When the temperature returns to normal, the original data file remains connected, and DNA is protected from disruption.
According to the scientist, this procedure results in fewer errors because PCR occurs independently in each capsule.
This concept was first proposed in the 1980s, and in 2012, Harvard scientists proved it by storing a 52,000-word book in DNA. They could store over 1,280,000 GB of data per gramme.
This demonstrates the breadth of natural wonders and how much more there is to uncover!
