The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that internet services in the country will be suspended indefinitely. The decision to block mobile broadband services was made on the Ministry of Interior's directions.
Protests erupted in response to the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
In addition to disrupting mobile internet services, key social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have reportedly been inaccessible to many users in Pakistan since the protests began.
Violent demonstration videos were extensively circulated on social media platforms, prompting the decision to suspend mobile broadband connections. The PTA spokeswoman acknowledged receiving allegations of interruptions on social media platforms, but could not confirm their reality.
According to reports, "unwarranted" protest footage circulated on social media, causing interruptions on numerous platforms beginning around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, causing inconvenience for locals.
The suspension of internet services has caused public concern because it inhibits people's capacity to receive critical information, communicate, and interact with digital platforms. The PTA and authorities have yet to provide an ETA for the restoration of internet services.
