Take caution! Millions of Gmail accounts will be deleted by Google in December.
Google has alerted users to the possibility that their idle Gmail accounts could be removed in December

Users have been warned by Google that their inactive Gmail accounts might be deleted in December. This is consistent with Google's previous declaration from May 2023 that it intended to remove accounts that had not been used for two years.

This latest notice from Google alerts users in advance that the policy covers dormant Google accounts linked to a number of services, including Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Photos, in addition to Gmail. December 1, 2023, is the deadline that users have set for themselves to take action and stop possible deletions.

Google intends to send multiple reminders, including recovery emails, to users with inactive Gmail accounts until November 30 in order to make sure they are informed and prompted to take action. In the event that users do not log in or interact with their accounts, they risk having their accounts and content deleted.

Google's motivation for implementing this policy stems from security issues related to dormant accounts. The company stressed the serious security risk posed by inactive accounts in a blog post published earlier in May. Over time, the security of these accounts deteriorates, leaving them open to hacking and potentially being used illegally or for the propagation of spam.

It is imperative that users comprehend that this policy is an ongoing process. In the future, Google retains the right to remove an account that is left inactive for more than two years by the user.

It is recommended that users log in at least once every two years to protect their accounts and prevent deletion. It is important to note that using the account in any Google service, like YouTube or Google Drive, will work in place of specifically logging into Gmail.

It is important to remember that this policy only applies to individual Google accounts; accounts linked to businesses are not affected. Google actively encourages users to take the required actions to keep their Google accounts viable and secure.
