The Asia Cup will be held in Pakistan in September, but India has decided not to send a team because of political concerns between the two nations.
During the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, Pakistan proposed a hybrid model to resolve the issue, in which other teams would play their matches in Pakistan. In contrast, the Indian team would play in another nation.
ACC President Jay Shah indicated an interest in the idea during the meeting, but after leaving for India, he changed his mind. Shah recently said that the council expects input from other participating nations before deciding the location for the Asia Cup.
During a media conference, Shah stated, "We are awaiting feedback from other nations to finalize the venue for the 2023 Asia Cup and clarity on the India-Pakistan match."
According to sources, the Asia Cup may not occur this year if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stands by its position on the hybrid model. The PCB is allegedly ready for such a possibility.
The PCB has disapproved of the notion of staging the full tournament elsewhere.
According to different sources, the cricket boards of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka reportedly unsuccessfully tried to persuade Pakistan to host the Asia Cup at a neutral site.
The PCB thinks that the matter needs to be settled immediately to prevent issues in the future, particularly concerning hosting the Champions Trophy in 2025, even though Sri Lanka and the UAE are both eager to host the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun making preparations for a five-nation competition within the time period left empty by the event's cancellation.
