In Karachi, a road constructed of recycled plastic has been built thanks to a partnership between DMC South, Shell Pakistan, and the startup BRR Enterprise. The project's objectives are to address the problem of plastic trash and encourage ecologically responsible behaviour in the city.
The road was constructed in Karachi using a dry process technique that recycled over 2.5 tonnes of used Shell lubricant bottles. It is close to the Shell House. Shell Pakistan wants to lessen plastic waste and help create sustainable infrastructure by putting these plastic bottles into the asphalt road.
Plastic garbage poses a serious threat to the ecosystem since it is difficult to decompose and may have negative consequences. While plastic bottles might take up to 300 years to break down, plastic bags can take up to 500 years. Shell Pakistan is working to alleviate this environmental issue by utilising used plastic bottles in road construction.
In comparison to normal roads, roads with plastic infusions provide a number of benefits, including enhanced flexibility, durability, and a lifespan that is approximately three times longer. Additionally, employing plastic in road construction lowers expenses because it is more accessible and affordable than traditional building materials. This novel strategy addresses the societal issue of plastic waste while simultaneously promoting sustainable infrastructure.
Waqar Siddiqui, the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited, expressed his excitement for the project's success during the opening of the freshly built road. In order to reduce plastic waste and offer a green option for upcoming infrastructure projects in Pakistan, he emphasised the significance of repurposing used lubricant bottles to build a road.
