Pakistan has improved on the World Press Freedom Index, moving up seven spots to position 150 out of 180 nations from position 157 in 2016. India, in comparison, dropped 11 spots to land at number 161, as the country's plurality is being threatened by media purchases made by oligarchs connected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For the sixth year in a row, Norway continues to be at the top of the list, followed by Ireland and Denmark in second and third position, respectively. The Netherlands is now in sixth place after moving up 22 spots. The worst nations for independent journalists and pundits continue to be North Korea and Vietnam. Due in great part to a hostile climate for journalists, the United States dropped three spots to 45th.
The findings demonstrated how conventional political involvement is spreading throughout many nations, including India, where political actors frequently engage in extensive disinformation or propaganda campaigns. It is significant to note that Reporters Without Borders is a nonprofit group that defends and supports information freedom.
