The government of Pakistan routinely adjusts petrol and diesel prices in accordance with global trends and currency fluctuations. In a recent announcement, they revealed plans to lower petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices in May 2024.
This decision stems from a decline in international oil prices. Currently, petrol is priced $1.86 lower per barrel at $107.16, while HSD sees a decrease of $4.3, standing at $104.76. With global oil prices on a downward trajectory, there is an anticipation for a corresponding reduction in fuel prices within Pakistan.
The exchange rate between the Pakistani rupee and the US dollar also plays a crucial role in determining fuel prices. Presently, the exchange rate hovers around PKR 278.38 per USD. While the rate has been relatively stable recently, any fluctuations could impact the cost of petrol and diesel.
The government aims to slash petrol prices by approximately Rs3.75 per liter and HSD by about Rs7.85 per liter. This adjustment is intended to align local fuel prices with the decreased global oil rates, thereby easing the financial burden on Pakistani citizens.
As of now, petrol is priced at Rs293.94 per liter, and HSD stands at Rs290.38 per liter in Pakistan. If the proposed changes are implemented, petrol could see a reduction to approximately Rs286.09 per liter, while HSD may drop to around Rs286.63 per liter in May 2024.
However, these projections are subject to alterations based on shifts in global oil prices and exchange rates. The government is set to finalize the new prices on April 30, which will remain effective for the first half of May. This transparent approach provides clarity to consumers and businesses, enabling them to plan accordingly amidst changing fuel costs.
