The Khewra Salt Mines are a well-known tourist destination in the Pakistani province of Punjab. It is the second-largest salt mine in the world and the biggest and oldest in Pakistan. The mine's history dates back to roughly 320 BC, when Alexander the Great's army discovered it, albeit the army's horses were actually the ones who first found it by tasting the salty stones.
The Khewra Salt Mine is located in the Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of the Jhelum District, around 200 kilometres from both Islamabad and Lahore. It is accessible from the Lilla interchange via the M2 highway after travelling for around 30 km on the Lilla route in the direction of Pind Dadan Khan.
The mine extends around 2400 feet into the mountain from the entrance and is situated about 945 feet above sea level. It is a big underground mine, spanning 110 km2.
