KARACHI - As the monsoon season is expected to begin on July 3, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning on Sunday about urban floods in various cities.
The westerly wave and moist currents from the Arabian Sea are expected to have an impact on higher portions of the country, according to a July 3 evening Met Office forecast.
Up until July 8, rainfall with only a few strong falls or hailstorms is forecast for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and central Punjab.
According to the PMD's advisory, between July 4 and 7, "heavy rain may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore and may cause landslides in the vulnerable areas of Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa."
Similarly, rains or thundershowers have been predicted in Barkhan, Loralai, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Lasbella, Awaran, Musakhel, D.I Khan, Bannu, Karak, Waziristan, D.G khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Sahiwal and Okara from July 5 till July 8.
On July 7-8, it's predicted to rain monsoon-style in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, Mithi, Chhor, Padidan, Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Mirpur Khas, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
According to the PMD, "heavy falls may cause flash flood in hill torrent areas of D.G. Khan and neighbouring areas of northeast Balochistan" from July 6 to July 8.
It advised farmers to limit their activity while keeping the weather forecast in mind and tourists to exercise caution at this time in order to avoid any unpleasant circumstances.
Since significant falls and dust storms may cause loose buildings, such as solar panels and electricity poles, to be damaged, the public is advised to remain in safe areas throughout the period.
