Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was apprehended by paramilitary forces on Tuesday, according to local GEO TV. Mr Khan was arrested from a courtroom in Islamabad in a corruption case, according to the broadcaster.
On social media, a video of a swarm of paramilitary personnel surrounding Imran Khan and whisking him away to a truck has gone viral. The footage was also posted by Imran Khan's party, which claimed he was "badly pushed."
"They have severely injured (sic) Imran Khan." People of Pakistan, this is the moment to preserve your country. "You won't get another chance," it said.
According to Dawn, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq ordered the Islamabad police chief, interior ministry secretary, and extra attorney general to come before the court within 15 minutes.
"The IHC CJ said he was exercising "control" and warned that if the Islamabad police chief did not appear before the court, he would "summon" the prime minister," Dawn added.
"Come to court and tell us why Imran has been arrested and in which case," Justice Farooq said, according to a Pakistani daily.
"Rangers have occupied the Islamabad High Court, lawyers are being tortured, and Imran Khan's car has been surrounded," Imran Khan's aide and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry tweeted in Urdu.
"Rangers have kidnapped Imran Khan from inside the Islamabad High Court."
"The party has issued an order to begin protests across Pakistan immediately," PTI leader Azhar Mashwani tweeted.
PTI also tweeted a video of an injured guy with blood spots on his shirt, alleging Imran Khan's lawyer had been "badly injured" inside the IHC. "Black day for our democracy and country," it said.
